چکیده

Dielectric-based methods were used to determine nondestructively and simultaneously bulk density and moisture content in shelled peanuts from measurement of their relative complex permittivity at microwave frequencies (7–12 GHz) and 24 C. The first method is based on direct relationships between the two components of the relative complex permittivity (dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor) and the bulk density and moisture content. The second method allows bulk density determination without knowledge of moisture content and temperature of shelled peanut samples from a complex-plane representation of the relative complex permittivity. Finally, moisture content in shelled peanuts is determined independent of bulk density changes with the use of density-independent permittivity functions. Statistical analysis provided bulk density and moisture content calibration equations at several microwave frequencies along with corresponding standard errors of calibration over wide ranges of bulk density and moisture content. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Temperature-compensated and Density-independent Moisture Content Determination in Shelled Maize by Microwave Measurements

Moisture content of shelled maize, Zea mays L., was correlated with the attenuation and phase shift of electromagnetic waves travelling through a layer of grain. Several calibration equations are presented in the paper that are based on measurements taken at 15)2 GHz for various grain densities, moisture contents and temperatures. Validation of the calibration equations indicated that moisture ...

A microwave method for on-line determination of bulk density and moisture content of particulate materials

A new method for simultaneous and independent on-line determination of bulk density and moisture content in particulate materials by measurements of the relative complex permittivity is proposed. The bulk density is determined, based on a representation in the complex plane of relative complex permittivity normalized to bulk density. For moisture content determination, a new density-independent...

Using cereal grain permittivity for sensing moisture content

A brief history of cereal grain moisture measurement by sensing the electrical properties of grain is presented. The basic principles are also described for using radio-frequency (RF) and microwave dielectric properties, or permittivity, of grain for sensing moisture through their correlation with moisture content. The development of density-independent functions of the permittivity is explaine...

Sensing grain and seed moisture and density from dielectric properties

The importance of moisture measurement in grain and seed is discussed, and a brief history of the development of moisture sensing instruments, based on sensing of dielectric properties of these materials, is presented. Data are presented graphically on the permittivities or dielectric properties of grain and seed showing their variation with frequency, moisture content, temperature, and bulk de...

Useful Relationships between Dielectric Properties and Bulk Densities of Granular and Powdered Materials

When knowledge of the dielectric properties, or permittivity, of granular or powdered materials is important, as in dielectric heating applications or in the sensing of moisture content by radio-frequency or microwave instruments, some reliable relationship between the dielectric properties and the bulk density of the material is required. Linear relationships between functions of the permittiv...
